G od only knew why Jack had changed his mind about hanging out with me. I was still angry about what he'd done to me. The smoothie in particular. But a part of me wanted to play this game, see where it would lead.

Curiosity killed the cat, Elle.

But Einstein said it was important to never stop questioning things, brain.

Touché.

Becoming one of the Darkdogs might have been a shock to me, but it looked like an even bigger shock to the rest of the group as I stepped into the music room with Jack.

Lila was sitting on a pink beanie bag and immediately rose to her feet at the sight of me. She'd become somewhat protective of me since we'd grown closer. She of all people had witnessed the extent of Jack's asshattery over the years she'd known him, so I reckoned she was going to be the most confused by this turn of events.

“What's going on?” Jed asked from behind the drum kit, flicking a dreadlock out of his eyes. “Does she want to make a deal?”

He spoke as if I wasn't there and I had a good mind to remind him of how he'd danced half-naked in front of me at Lila's party. But since then, all of the Darkdogs (barring Lila) had gone back to pretending I didn't exist.

“No.” Jack guided me across the room and planted me firmly down in an office chair.

Zack sucked in a horrified breath. “That's your chair,” he gasped.

The reaction would have been more fitting if I'd sat on the Queen of England's throne after bitch-slapping her out of it.

I glanced up at Jack with a questioning look.

“I'll get a new chair.” Jack shrugged, rounding on the room. “Elle is now part of the Darkdogs. Any objections?”

Teagan's cheeks were turning red, potentially with anger. “Jack, what are you playing at?”

Temper rolled up his sleeves, seeming agitated by the drama.

“We need new blood,” Jack said, directing his gaze at her. “Elle qualifies.”

“Why?” Teagan demanded, getting to her feet. “Six of us is plenty. And of all people Jack, why her?”

My heart clenched uncomfortably.

“Seven is a powerful number,” Jack pointed out.

Lila touched Teagan's arm, her eyes pleading with her to back down, but Teagan shook her off, walking toward her brother with intention. My stomach coiled into a ball.

“Jack,” Teagan said through her teeth. “Can we talk outside?”

“Got one waiting out there,” Temper said, poking his head out the door.

“Not necessary,” Jack replied to Teagan. “Whatever you wanna say, say it here.”

Teagan sighed, glancing at me before lifting her chin. “Fine. Elle is not suitable for this group. You know exactly why. And frankly, you're an idiot for bringing her here.”

Zack gave me an anxious look and I folded my arms, unsure what to do.

“An idiot, am I?” I couldn't see Jack's eyes but I imagined they were full of hellfire.

Teagan folded her arms. "Yes, if you think this is a good idea."

Jack stepped closer to her, lowering his tone.

“I´m over it, T.”

I narrowed my eyes, unsure what he meant.
